Do-do-do-do-dora

There's no doubt about it.

Bree Loves Dora

Here she is at Christmas sporting her new Dora backpack:

However, as much as she loves Dora, I'm not entirely certain why she felt compelled to color her this way.  Because, quite frankly, its a little creepy seeing this red eyed, green monster staring at me as I watch TV, cook or sit in my chair reading.

But who am I to stop creativity?

March New Years Resolution Review

In March, I gave more,
  • turned in 44 box tops to my local schools.  How many did you turn in?  Its the simplest way to help your schools.  Add in a little smart shopping and the use of coupons and the box top products end up cheaper than the store brands.  My kids got to eat yogurt to their hearts content, we dined on cinnamon rolls every Sunday morning, I experimented with new recipes for crescent rolls and used the best of the best toilet paper for our bums, all while giving back to the schools.  Everyone wins.
recycled more,
  • recycled 7, yes S-E-V-E-N, plastic shopping bags FULL of other plastic shopping bags.   I guess you could also say I went green this month as well.  Although truthfully, I always do recycle them.  I was just extra cautious about not throwing any of them away just to forever lay in our landfills.
and donated more,
  • donated three times as much as usual to Scouting for Food due to my couponing.  Heck, most of the stuff I donated was free or less than 50 cents!

  • donated two large bags of gently used stuffed animals to the hospital.

But most proudly this month I completed an unofficial challenge bestowed upon me by my mother in law.

Around Christmastime, my mother in law became involved in a local charity called the Beach House.  Its a non-profit charity that helps place homeless men- women- families back into homes, jobs, society.  You can read more about it here.  As she read about my frustration this Christmas at the ever growing epidemic of the season meaning "bring me, give me, leave me, I want, I want, I want" instead of "I'm blessed, I'm fortunate, I've already got more than I deserve", she presented me with a gift- a gift of opportunity.

She handed me a prepaid visa card with the instructions of purchasing items on the Beach House's donation list through couponing and deal searching.  It was an opportunity to help people by providing every day things that they need without having to front the money, which at the time was tight.  Diapers, baby food, formula, Christmas expenses and more makes giving as much as I would like quite impossible.  However, what did I know about couponing and finding the best deals?  Money for me wouldn't be so tight if I had a clue about such things.  So I guess I have her to thank for my new obsession hobby....  Anyways, the rest, they say, is history.

On my mother in laws behalf,  I was able to purchase all this for the Beach House:

I'd take the time to list all the products but I've got two hours to get this blog posted to meet my Aprils New Years Resolution so I'll just hit a few of the things you may not be able to see.  Two boxes of diapers, six jumbo packages of feminine products, four airwick freshmatics with six refills, deodorants, cleaning products of all sorts, shower gels, disinfectant wipes and more.

Guess how much I paid??  I'll give you a starting base.  If I would have paid full price, it would have come to a whopping $350.67.

Come on.....take a guess.....  How much did I end up spending?

Okay, okay, enough suspense.  I paid $184.91.   That's a savings of $165.76!  Plus I got four free Suave Professional hair styling products and a free $10 Meijer gift card.  And the best part of all this.  I did it all in 2, yes T-W-O, shopping trips.  One trip to Meijer.  One trip to Rite Aid.  Many people benefit.

So once again, to all of you who think couponing isn't worth the time, go back up and reread the numbers.  Aren't these all products you use?  Are you really paying full price for them??  I'll help you see the error of your ways and teach you the valuable resource that is using coupons.  I'll even be generous and split the savings with you.  75-25, okay?

Be back shortly

All right loyal blog followers, I've had a lot on my plate lately.  Birthdays, baby showers, parties, work, a great desire to purge things from my house thus leading to the prepping and organizing of a garage sale, taxes, cleaning garage, shed shopping, amazing deal finding, couponing, struggling with a 3 year old to learn her letters and, more importantly, teaching her how to share toys and forver answering the question why?  Why?? WHY???

As an apology for neglecting my blog thus far this year, my April new years resolution will be to blog more and if at all possible, to blog every day.  After all, you deserve it.

My New Toy

You'd never know, from my lack of blogging that is, that I got a new camera for Christmas.

Introducing my Nikon Coolpix L110

I LOVE it!

I love being able to take pictures where I can focus in on what matters, making it stand out.

However I need to learn more about distancing when using the flash.  Man, these could have been good pictures too.

I love, that compared to my other camera, how quickly it snaps the pictures, capturing a split second moment like this...

I need to learn a little more about focusing,

and working with objects that refuse to sit still.

But over all what I love the most, is the claity of the pictures.  Never before with my other camera would I have been able to catch a string of drool like this:

Lovely isn't it?

February Resolutions Review

Summer 2010/Winter 2011
Isn't it amazing what a few months can do?

In February I focused a lot on the 'saving more money' resolution.  The library's budget is on the chopping block this July and there's nothing like the threat of losing more hours, or your job, to make you open your eyes and get yourself on the right financial track.  How much further ahead could we all be, in any aspect of life, if we'd only stay on track no matter how good things are going in life?

I did a lot of the standard unplugging things that are only occasionally being used.  For example, I brew one pot of coffee in the morning so why does it have to stay plugged in the rest of the 23 hours, 54 minutes of the day?  I also turned the thermostat down from its comfy 72 degrees to 70.  I then even braved turning it down to 68 degrees one day too!  But the hubby got chilly and cranked it back up three degrees.  I wasn't complaining!

However there are only so many of those kind of changes you can make, and truthfully, you don't see dramatic savings either.  (except for our electric bill after taking down all our Christmas lights.  A $50 savings in one month alone!!  In case you weren't aware, we're kinda Christmas freaks with lights covering almost every inch of wall space available)  But the one expense that we all have, that we have complete control over how much we pay, that we can see mega savings by spending a mere 15 minutes of planning is our grocery bills.  That's right, I've rediscovered couponing.
Throughout our marriage I've gone through phases of using coupons.  But back in the day when we were both working full time, didn't have kids and our house payment was only $357 a month, we were "made of money" so why did we need to use coupons?  How much can you really save?  I mean really?  Fast forward a few years to a larger house, part time hours and two kids later, the desire and need for couponing takes on a whole new meaning.  And I'm very proud to say that in my first month back at it I scored some serious deals.  Its such a thrill, a rush, a motivation to see your savings add up and up and soon you find yourself snickering at the lady in front of you just paid full price for her item when you just bought it last week for a fraction of the cost.  Then out of nowhere you notice you start getting mad at yourself for thinking you just bought something on a good deal and used a coupon only to discover it went on a better sale at another store and if you would have just waited and used the coupon now it would have been an even better score and...  Couponing, although fun, can really bring out the aggressive competitiveness you never knew you had.

This month I did all my shopping at Walmart.  Yup, thats right, I scored all these deals right here in my own hometown.  Saved money on gas already.  All I did was snag the grocery ads from the Toledo paper and price matched them at Walmart.  It was that easy.  This month I purchased:

4 - Excedrin Migraines
3 - Colgate Toothpastes
2 - 120 count Gain fabric softener sheets

Excedrin Migraine is a brand that's preferred in this household.  And it just so happened that when I was at the doctors office last month, I noticed a stack of $2.00 off Excedrin Migraine coupons.  Knowing that at some point this next year (experation dates was 12/31/11), I helped myself to four of them.  It just so happened that a few weeks later Rite Aid had Excedrin Migraine on sale for $1.99 a box!!  $1.99 minus my $2.00 coupon equals free.  Yes, F-R-E-E migraine pills.  Had I paid full price for them, I would have had to fork over $14.08 ($3.52 each) for four boxes.  Just by price matching alone I would have saved over $1.50 per box.  Thats a six dollar savings for just flipping through a few ads while on my lunch break.  Then subtract my awesomely scored coupons and they were free.  Free, free, free!!!

When it comes to toothpaste I'm normally a Crest girl.  No real reason for it.  Its what my dad always bought so its what I used.  But on that same lunch break I happened to notice that Kroger had Colgate on sale for 98 cents a tube.  I didn't put much thought into it until I found a 75 cent and two 50 cent off Colgate coupons from the same sunday paper.  If I would have paid full price, I would have spent, $5.19 ($1.73 each) for the three tubes but by price matching them down to 98 cents each, it came to a total of $2.94.  Subtract my three coupons and I only paid $1.19.  That's only 40 cents per tube of toothpaste.  And for that price, I'll bend on what brand I use.  Wouldn't you?  And you know what?  My teeth haven't noticed that I switched toothpastes!!

Ah, fabric softener.  A necessity for doing laundry, but as far as I can tell, they all work the same.  So for me, fabric softener is more about smell and price than brand.  I'll buy any brand as long as it smells good and doesn't cost too much.  Well imagine my elated couponing happiness when I noticed that Rite Aid (they really have some awesome sales) had 120 count Gain fabric softener on sale for $3.99 the same week that there was a $3.00 off one Gain product coupon in the paper!!  You better believe I drove my little butt over to my mom's house and stole her coupon too!   I price matched 2 boxes of Gain down from $4.28 to the $3.99 and used my coupons.  Meaning I paid $1.98 for 240 sheets of fabric softener.  Awesome!

Had I paid full price for the 4 Excedrin, 2 Gains, and 3 Colgates, I would have paid a whopping $27.98.  And considering what was bought (medicines, fabric softeners, toothpastes), that doesn't seem like such an outrageous price.  But by taking 10 minutes on my break to flip through a few ads I was able to price match items I needed or would need down to $18.88, a near ten dollar savings alone!  Then by taking a few extra minutes to flip through and clip a few coupons, I only paid $3.17!!!

So to anyone who does not believe couponing is worth it, look at the numbers.  I saved $24.81 for roughly 15 minutes worth of work.  I think only doctors make that kind of money!  And if you still don't think its worth it, then I have a proposition for you.  Give me a list of products you use.  I'll search the ads, clips the coupons and go to the store for you.  And as payment, I keep the savings.  Your wallet would never know the difference anyways, right?

My Little Star

Cars.  Car noises.  Lights.  Moving parts.

The Li'l Zoomers Spinnin' Sounds Speedway is every little boys dream toy.

And thats why Santa brought it for Jacob.

Not only is it a great way to race cars on its spinning speedway, its also the best seat in the house.

One day shortly after Christmas, a friend of mine stopped over to visit.  Hoping to keep the children occupied so I could enjoy a little adult conversation I broke out the speedway.  Check out the uncanny coincidence between Jacob and the boy on the box.

Not only were the outfits almost identical, the boy in the commercial is referred to as 'Jacob'.  How cool, huh?  Maybe Jacob will be my little TV star someday.  Wouldn't you buy anything this face was on??

HOWEVER,

This face

 and this face

disturb me a little bit.

Ode to my Bathroom

Dearest Bathroom, oh how I love you,

Even in the depths of night, with sleep heavy in my eyes, I never fear of breaking an ankle by stepping on or tripping over toys just by walking across the room.

There are never mountainous piles of laundry awaiting me.

No stacks upon stacks of dishes waiting to be washed.

No hours of dusting are ever needed.

Only cat nose smudges need to be cleaned from the windows, too bad I can't say the same about the mirrors.

A quick emptying of the trash and a heavy dousing of Clorox Anywhere spray can check you off my cleaning list in ten minutes tops.

I no longer scoff at the jokes of parents retreating to you for seclusion.  Although a dead bolt lock would be a bit overkill, installing a solid wood door and sound-proofing the walls would not.

When I can manage to slip through the door alone, I cherish our short but sweet time together.  You're my oasis amongst the constant repetitive chatter, babble, leaking noses, poopy diapers, block throwing, re-reading the same book for the umpteenth time, never-ending chaotic-ness that is having two young children.  I love you.

Sincerely,
A Mother who would not trade this life for anything in the world but may need to invest in ear plugs to keep her sanity

Video Week - Day Four

Jumping Laughter - September 2010

During the Fulton County Fair Bree, Jacob and I had to entertain ourselves somehow while Daddy was off working.  So here is yet another video (I'm noticing a pattern here) of Bree proving herself useful as an older sister by getting Jacob to laugh.  Who knew jumping could be so funny?

Video Week - Day Three

Monkeying Around - December 2010

Back in December I thought I was getting a rare sleeping in day.  It was nearly 8:00AM and Jacob wasn't fussing and Bree hadn't given me the annual morning staus that "Its not dark outside."  I drifted back to sleep until a glorious 8:07AM when I heard the strangest sound coming from Jacob's monitor follow by some infectious laughter.  I just knew that this couldn't be good...

Video Week - Day Two

Feeding Time - September 17, 2010

Like mother, like daughter.  Monkey see, monkey do. When the cats away, the mice will play. Okay maybe that last one doesn't fit but this is the age where we have to be ever so careful of what we do and say around our young ones because they will mimic everything we do.  Here is a clip of Bree trying to be helpful by feeding Jacob from an empty jar

Video Week - Day One

Passing Time Video - November 16th, 2010

Its a simple fact that every mother knows.  After time toys get boring.  And one day, fairly soon I do fear, I will hear those precious words of "There's nothing to do!"  Its now in the prime of my life that I need to fine tune my creative skills to survive the my-life-would-be-so-much-better-if-only-I-had-that-toy blues.  In this video is a perfect example of blocks becoming so much more exciting.

January Resolution Review

Quite obviously the more blogging resolution fell through the cracks in January but it wasn't all in vain.  I've been quite the organizing freak this month.  Check it out.

Our house is loaded with closets.  Not only to the kids have closets in their rooms but Jim and I each have our own closet.  Then there is our coat closet, game closet and junk closet.  Just as I don't like the idea of have a junk drawer in the kitchen (what a waste of drawer space!), I really don't like the idea of a junk closet when I have issues finding space for everyday items in the house.  So when the motivation hit, I went with it.  I emptied out the junk, found a new home for it all, and stood back to decide the best way to utilize the space.

My craft stuff!  Yes, this is what must go in this closet.  Previously craft items could be found stored in Bree's closet, under Jacob's desk, on my side of the bed, in the dining room buffet, on the end of the couch....  But now look at it...

Its all together. Its mostly organized. Its out of the children's reach.  I find myself every now and then just going to the closet and staring.  Its so pretty.  I feel so organized already.

Then it was onto the mound of magazines I got last year but never had the time to sit down and read.  So I sat.  And I read.  And I read. And I read. And then eventually I just skimmed.  But I made it through the stack, ripping out everything that I like, found useful, inspired me and more and have been compiling it all into a binder that will become my Holy Grail of craft ideas, recipes, gardening tips, home improvement thoughts and whatever else I see fit.

Along with moving more, donating more and wasting less I've been keeping up with four of my New Years Resolutions.  How have you been doing?

Puzzle Prodigy

A mere fraction of a second before taking this picture Jacob tipped over his alphabet train, scattering his block everywhere and making quite a noise.  The face was too priceless to retake the picture.

There's no doubt about it.  Bree loves puzzles.
At night we'll put her to bed and when we go check on her an hour and a half later, she'll be sitting there putting all her puzzles together using the light from her closet.  So for Christmas this year Santa thought it was a good idea to bring Bree not one, but TWO big girl 24 piece Dora puzzles.  Imagine my utmost pride when she sat down at the kitchen table and assemble the entire puzzle
without any help!

In the Making

If you love the TV show Glee, you're a Gleek.

If you're into the Twilight saga, you're a Twi-Hard.

If you're everything Star Trek, you're a Trekkie.

If you're a fan of Avatar, you're an Avatard.

Then what are you if you're totally into VeggieTales?
A Veggie-tarian??

I'm just curious because I think I've got one of those growing in my house...

Some Things Never Change

When Bree was a baby she ALWAYS slept like this:

Arms straight up in the air.  Dad always used to say that it meant she was happy and relaxed.  Its good to know some things never change.

My apologies

The whole blogging more New Years resolution hasn't gotton off to the best start.  We've had a lot going on and we've been one sick family again recently.  I promise to do my best posting every day this week.

Another year over, and a new one just begun

Dear 2010,

Wow.  What words can I use to describe you?   Fast.  Frustrating.  Amazing.  Unexpected.  Unfair.  Eventful.  Surprising.  Accomplishments.  Achievements.  Rollercoaster.  Over.  Lets review why this vast array of words suits you:

In January, Mom fell and broke her shoulder resulting in surgery, pins, and a nursing home stay.  While the timing of her surgery worked well as I had to be at the hospital for a three hour blood glucose test anyways, the situation in whole was terrible timing. Jim and I were to leave for Florida for a mini vacation a few days after Mom was to be discharged from the hospital.  Dad would need help since Mom could barely do anything for herself and with us out of town that would leave a lot of weight on everyone elses shoulders, not to mention the guilt we would feel by not being there to help.  Overall it was decided that it would be best for Mom to recuperate in a nursing home. I felt such turmoil in making the decision to continue with our vacation plans.  Mom would be alone in a nursing home, Dad would be alone at home.  Still to this day I can't say if I made the right choice by going and missing out on what would be one of the few remaining weeks with Dad but it was good spending one on one time with Grandma and Grandpa Lebarr.  Hopefully in a year or two, we can make the trip again but this time with less anxiety and without being pregnant.

In February, we got to see the great Ted Neely reprise his role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar for his last tour ever.  Although I've known the music of Andrew Lloyd Weber for years and even marched to it in band, I had never seen the movie or musical performed of Jesus Christ Superstar until I got married. So imagine my utmost astonishment when I learned that my mom and dad had went to see the musical when it first began.  And Ted Neely had performed in it as well!

March brought a surprising visit of an uncle who we hadn't seen in years upon years.  It was a visit that you could tell put a little joy in Dad's heart and to whom I contribute the errand running of the day to the um...pleasant... birth of our son Jacob.  As I would like to have peaceful sleep tonight, its a story I won't retell but will always have this post to refer back to as an extra dose of birth control.

And then its April.  The month didn't start off too bad.  Dad had started taking oxygen.  He look healthier.  He sounded amazing.  All he wanted to do was hold and care for Jacob and since he was feeling better, he was able to.  My regret, as is any ones, is that we didn't get enough pictures.  Jim  also turned the big 3-0 in April.  Of course I wanted to have a big bash for him but with just having a baby the details never worked out.  And then things quickly went downhill from there.  On April 9th, my best friends father lost his battle with cancer.  I remember walking into the church thinking about my own Dad slowly losing his own battle with cancer, wondering how long it would be before I would be one standing there greeting people for my fathers funeral.  Twenty days later, my question was answered.  Maybe someday I'll retell the story of that last hour.  Maybe by putting it into words I can stop reliving it in my head on the most random of nights or as I'm driving down the road to the store.  Maybe I can find peace in it and all that we will be facing over the next few years with Mom's health as well.  Maybe.

With Dad passing away at the end of April, his viewing wasn't held until May, which wasn't exactly the best start to the month.  I had plenty of distractions like potty training Bree, going back to work and beginning my first (and very successful too) garden.  I learned that two and half people (Bree being that half person) cannot possibly eat the vast amount of tomatoes that 12 tomato plants produce and that green pepper plants are not worth my time.  Although they grow big and tall and leafy, it is not worth all the watering and weeding for two peppers that were smaller than the palm of my hand.  Next summer, mass producing green beans.

In June I biked 35 miles in the MS Bike to the Bay.  It was my first time biking that far even by adding up an entire summer or two worth but it was fun and I plan on doing it again next.  Hopefully I'll have more time to train and maybe even "talk" Jim into doing with me.

Apparently not much happened in July because I cannot think of a thing to write about and that's okay.  I'll take uneventful versus drama any day.

August was greeted with a coworkers daughter, who was only 31, passing away.  She too lost her battle with cancer.  Her passing struck a cord in my heart as she left behind a young daughter.

September flew by as all Septembers do with working fair after fair and the start of the football season.  It too was a very uneventful month and I'm not complaining.

In October Jim and I celebrated a milestone.  Our ten year wedding anniversary.  Of course we wanted to celebrate, live it up, take a vacation and more but instead opted to drop the kids off to Grandma and Grandpas for a weekend alone at home, finishing all those little projects that nag at the back of our minds, catching up on movies we've missed over the past three years, and putting together a puzzle.  And thats what I love about us.  Forget the fancy dinners and bottles of wine to reconnect and celebrate accomplishments but instead bring on the tents, sleeping bags and weenies over a fire.  We're simple people who take pleasures in the everyday things.  We know who we are, where we came from, what we want for ourselves and our family and won't get caught up in the game of "keeping up with the Jones."  We're ten years strong with no end in sight.  To infinity and beyond!!

November also brought a milestone. Gabrielle turned three!!  Can you believe it??  There are times she still seems so much my little girl but then there are times, like when I pick her up from the sitters and she's begging me to go to school, that I realize she's growing up so very quickly.  Right now we're struggling with the three year old listening/obeying issue and sometimes I think that maybe sending her to preschool will help in that area.  But then I realize that by putting her in school begins the next chapter in my life, the chapter that includes snow and fog delays, cancellations, schedules, school programs, holiday and summer vacations, more schedules, breakfast at the table every morning instead of lazy, pajama breakfasts on the couch, homework, even more schedules, dropping kids off at two different locations and more.  And, dang it, I'm just not ready for that chapter!  November, however, did not end on a good note.  The flu struck our house and it hit hard.  We dealt with two sick children for the first time and lived to tell about it.  It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be.  I imgained a trip or two or urgent care for dehydration or some random flu side effect but instead just needed to have every surface in my house shampooed, washed, and wiped off from projectiling fluids.  At least my house is clean.  Then yet another tragedy struck.  A co-worker of mine who also used to be a co-worker of my dad's at the telephone company passed away.  She also lost her battle with cancer. Enough already, right?

Then I'm not entirely sure what happened in December.  I think there was a Christmas tree, a few presents, maybe some cookies and snow involved but I can't be certain.  I blinked and it was over.

Now we say goodbye to you, 2010.  I think you held a few more downs than ups but some years are just like that.  When I think about everything that happened and its effect on my life and my future, I'm reminded of a quote that I read somewhere that impacted me enough to commit it to memory and to live by it.

We can't control the wind but we can adjust the sails.

                                               Sincerely,
The Dominiques
Jim, Rachel, Bree and Jacob
